The school held a very successful World Book Day. In the lead up to the day the children learned the book day song ‘Pick Up a Book’ and Mr Jones used several assemblies to share his favourite books, such as The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and The Demon Headmaster by Gillian Cross. Children spent the day in mixed class groups, moving to different teachers and reading stories from around the world. We also saw some fantastic costumes from both staff and pupils.
Using the money from the Tesco community grant, we put out some of the new equipment into both playgrounds. We have limited the amount to begin with, but will introduce new pieces as the term goes on. The children were given a demonstration of each piece of equipment in assembly so that they understand the expectations when using them and how to look after them.
The boys team played a league game against Theydon Bois Primary School. The children all showed excellent team work and sportsmanship, winning the game 4-0.
Year 5 went to the Epping Forest sports hall athletics finals at West Hatch Secondary. Competing against 7 other teams, they took part in both track and field events, showing great resilience and encouraging each other to do their best. Whilst they did not qualify for the Essex athletics, we are very proud of the teamwork shown by our Year 5.
We are delighted that our fantastic poppy wreaths have now been moved to the Upshire war memorial at St Thomas Church.
In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

We are so proud of our girl's football team who took part in a Football tournament on Friday 6th October. They won all their first round games without conceding any goals. They ultimately came fourth out of twenty other teams which is an incredible achievement for their first time playing.
